A.J. Fernandez of A.J. Fernandez Cigar Co.

by

I have had the privilege of meeting A.J. Fernandez of A.J. Fernandez Cigar Co. on a few occasions and thankfully his English is better than my Spanish so he could understand how much I truly enjoyed this release from his farm and factory. A term that is all too often thrown around in the cigar industry is “Master Blender” and often times it is just not accurate or just fawning praise to a cigar maker or brand owner. For my cigar dollar and experience A.J. Fernandez is such a Master Blender having created numerous cigar blends and brands under his own flag, mentoring, blending and rolling for other brand owners as well as partnering with competitors in the market place to create unique collaborations. Never boring, never standing still yet always consistent in quality, construction and flavor he has once again created a masterpiece with Last Call.

So what is on the inside? Well there are 2 versions of Last Call a Habano and Maduro. The Habano has: Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano Rosado, Binder: Nicaraguan, Filler: Select AJ Fernandez Nicaraguan Fillers. The Maduro has: Wrapper: Pennsylvania Broadleaf, Binder: Nicaraguan, Filler: Nicaraguan. Both are available in the following sizes – Geniales 4 1/2 x 48, Pequeñas 5 x 46, Corticas 4 x 52, Flaquitas 6 x 46 and Chiquitas 3 1/2 x 50; the 5 x 46 Habano being my favorite at medium strength. So how does it smoke? I get the lightest of floral notes that diminish as cedar and the lightest of red or perhaps white pepper stay throughout. Not to get to abstract in describing flavors but there is a lot going on here and I would expect no less from A.J. Fernandez after all he is a Master Blender.
