White Squirrel Pale Ale

The beers I’ve had by Bowling Green-based White Squirrel Brewery have been fairly faithful versions of basic styles – the kolsch and nut brown leap to mind when I hear the brewery’s name. But I was happy to, during my first-ever visit to the brewery in October, try the pale ale for the first time. Why? Well, because a good, solid American pale ale is one of my favorite beer styles.

White Squirrel doesn’t disappoint with this one. It’s nothing special, just a tasty, drinkable, balanced pale ale, with enough hops to give you the bitterness you’ve come to expect from a pale ale, and enough malts to give it plenty of body and a hint of familiar sweetness. Citra hops give it a fruity nose and plenty of subtle citrus qualities, and it checks in at a deceptive 6.0 percent alcohol by volume.

As it happens, I visited the brewery on the very day they canned this beer for the first time, so I got the surprise bonus of getting one of the first six-packs off the line. My only regret is that I didn’t buy two.
