Badger State Bitter Beaver IPA

by

Badger State Brewing Co. is located in Green Bay, Wis., a place normally associated with football, cheese, and bratwurst. But don’t forget what a brewing history the state of Wisconsin boasts. That’s still going on today, and Badger State is a willing participant.

With a gorgeous beer garden, a huge taproom with dozens of taps, event space, and more, Badger State is a destination brewery just blocks from historic Lambeau Field. Not only can you buy carry-out beers in the taproom after you’ve had a pint or two, you can also get some cheese curds to nibble while you imbibe and chat with friends.

I tried a couple of different beers on my visit, but the one that coaxed me into a buying a full pint was the Bitter Beaver IPA, a deep amber beer with an aroma that was earthy with a hint of floral fruitiness. There’s a prevalent malt sweetness, but the citrus notes mingle nicely and the medium bitterness followed by a piney finish help balance it all out. This is a well done beer, and one I recommend if you’re up north and find it on a store shelf or make it to the brewery for a visit. It’s only about an hour and a half north of Milwaukee. And try the cheese curds while you’re visiting – they’re delicious.
