Denim & Diamonds for Parkinson’s Support
10th Anniversary of the Denim & Diamonds Gala
June 2, 2017, Historic Locust Grove
Parkinson’s disease affects over 12,000 people in Kentucky. This long-term, degenerative disorder of the nervous system mainly affects motor functions, and in advanced stages, dementia is common. The Parkinson Support Center of Kentuckiana provides a host of programs designed to provide people suffering from Parkinson’s, and their care partners/families, with practical, effective programs and resources to improve quality of life. Proceeds from the 10th Annual Denim and Diamonds Gala provide funding for direct services to individuals and families affected by Parkinson’s, including innovative approaches to combating the disease like yoga, dance, Pilates, boxing, and swimming.
It was easy to see why the Parkinson Support Center of Kentuckiana is so beloved in the region. The Denim & Diamonds Gala and everyone who attended exuded friendliness and a feeling of family, bringing a sense of casual fun to an evening that was executed with class, style, and major fundraising prowess. Stories were shared and tears were shed. The live auction was high energy, fueled by the passions of the attendees and the loved ones for whom they attended. The event featured a 5-star menu featuring numerous local chefs, entertainment by Artie Dean Harris & Bourbontown, and tastings from Ballotin Chocolate Whiskey and Michter’s American Whiskey. And the boots! Guys and gals alike were strutting their stuff in gorgeous, comfortable western wear.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s, this charity is one worth investing in. While Men’s Best Guide doesn’t have exact numbers, a quick visit to the organization’s website echoes the sentiments of agency representatives – that programs and services are the primary focus, serving individuals and families across Kentucky and Southern Indiana, supported by a small staff of three dedicated individuals.
SO, if you don’t have this event on your radar for 2018, follow Parkinsons Support Center on Facebook and on their website at www.parkinsoncenter.org. Ditch the black tie for the hat and boots, enjoy some high-quality people and bourbon and best of all, help provide needed support to our friends, family, and neighbors living with Parkinson disease!
Ballotin Chocolate Whiskey
The Denim & Diamonds signature drink of the evening was “Forever in Blue Jeans” by Ballotin Chocolate Whiskey. I must admit, at the tasting table I was skeptical. A bourbon appreciator, if not aficionado, I generally steer clear of flavored bourbons and whiskey. I was glad I took the chance when it came to Ballotin. Although all the bourbons were flavored, the bourbon comes out as the strongest note by far – a smooth savory shot, with a subtle backdrop of chocolate, crème, caramel, and mint according to the 4 blends. Imagine a cocktail recipe list that spans from an Old Fashioned to a Mint Julep you could actually enjoy drinking before the ice melts.
For any of the Men’s Best Guide readers with a sweet-tooth, remember bourbon is great in baking. Just a couple that come to mind are bread pudding made with Ballotin Bourbon Ball, or a sponge cake topped off with pecans and syrup made with Ballotin Caramel Turtle.
Visit the Ballotin Facebook page for more recipes, information about the company, and how they are supporting life-changing charities in the Kentuckiana region. Happy tasting!
