Hoppin’ Frog BORIS the Crusher
Hoppin’ Frog’s website describes BORIS the Crusher Oatmeal Imperial Stout as “bodacious” (yes, BORIS is an acronym of Bodacious Otmeal Russion Imperial Stout). Actually, the word “bodacious” sounds about right to me, as this big beer (9.4 percent ABV) certainly will crush you if you drink too much.
Interestingly, the relatively subtle roast aroma belies the flavor depth in this one. It has a big coffee-like flavor with hints of dark chocolate and vanilla in a thick, classic imperial stout body, and with a surprisingly hoppy finish (60 IBU) to boot. In fact, the bitterness of the both the coffee tones and the hops come together for a finish that is oddly astringent.
In short, it’s not for the timid of palate. And yet for an imperial stout, it has an accessibility to it that is tough to describe, perhaps because the brewers didn’t go over the top – rather, they just presented a great representation of the style without a lot of frills. Works for me every time.
